The banking sector is entering a new phase in its AI journey, with institutions looking beyond experimentation towards wider operational use. Against this backdrop, Punjab National Bank (PNB) is bringing banks, technology companies, startups, academics and financial sector experts together at the PNB AI Summit 2026.
The 2-day summit, being held in Dwarka on August 31 and September 1, focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI and quantum technology in financial services. Policymakers, banking executives, technology firms and emerging companies are discussing use cases, implementation challenges and the capabilities required for an AI-led banking environment.
The summit is being attended by Department of Financial Services Additional Secretary Dr Debashish Prushti, PNB Managing Director and CEO Ashok Chandra, the director of the National Quantum Mission and the chairman of the Indian Banks’ Association, along with other industry representatives.
PNB focuses on practical AI applications
For PNB, the summit is part of a wider effort to understand how emerging technologies can be integrated into banking operations. Chandra said it is exploring AI, GenAI and quantum computing to make it faster, simpler and more effective for customers.
The focus is moving from technology adoption alone to identifying areas where these technologies can improve services and operations. Customer service is one area where AI could see wider use as it manage growing volumes of customer and transaction data.
Building internal AI capabilities
PNB is also investing in employee skills to support greater adoption of emerging technologies. According to Chandra, the bank has undertaken reskilling and upskilling programmes and established a Centre of Excellence for AI, GenAI and quantum technology.
The centre aims to build internal expertise and support practical experimentation with emerging technologies. Workforce training alongside technology investments could help PNB develop capabilities across different functions.
Banks and startups share AI solutions
Financial institutions at the summit are showcasing their AI and GenAI experiences, allowing participants to examine how these technologies are being tested and deployed in it.
Startups and technology companies are also presenting AI and GenAI solutions for financial services. The interaction gives it an opportunity to evaluate emerging products for specific requirements, while startups can demonstrate their technologies to potential industry users.
The discussions reflect the next stage of banking technology adoption, where AI and GenAI could influence how financial services are delivered, managed and tailored. With policymakers, banks, technology companies, startups and academia participating, the summit is focused on practical applications that can improve efficiency, strengthen capabilities and keep customer needs at the centre.
