A suspected AI generated video impersonating Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has triggered a cybercrime investigation in the state. The CB-CID cybercrime wing registered a case on Sept 1 after the video was found circulating on social media platforms.
The video showed a person resembling Vijay speaking in Hindi and asking people seeking financial assistance to contact a WhatsApp number.
The state police’s social media centre alerted the CB-CID cybercrime wing about the video, following which a case was registered. A cybercrime wing police inspector was then assigned to investigate the matter.
Police seek upload details
The cybercrime wing has sent a request to Meta seeking details of the Facebook ID and logs linked to the account through which the video was uploaded.
Police are working to identify those behind the videos and take legal action against them. Steps have also been initiated to remove the video from social media platforms.
Investigators suspect that some of the videos may have been shared through social media IDs originating in Pakistan.
Police issue public warning
Authorities have appealed to the public not to contact phone numbers mentioned in such videos or join WhatsApp groups linked to them.
People have also been advised not to follow instructions shared through such fraudulent messages as the investigation continues.
