A cybercrime investigation in Mumbai has uncovered a suspected money-routing network linked to 42 complaints across the country, with transactions worth around ₹7.42 crore traced through 22 bank accounts.
Khar police arrested Avinash Babasaheb Kharat on Saturday, August 9, 2026, in connection with the racket. Police said the accounts were allegedly used by cyber fraudsters to move funds linked to online scams.
The investigation began after a complainant reported losing ₹4.07 lakh. He was allegedly contacted through Telegram and promised high returns for completing certain online tasks. After being asked to transfer money to different bank accounts, he neither received the promised profits nor got his money back.
Technical analysis and information received through the national Cyber Helpline 1930 and Samvaye Portal helped police identify Kharat and Vikas Gajanan Bhujbal.
Mumbai Police said questioning Kharat revealed that the accused allegedly opened bank accounts in their own names and those of other individuals across multiple banks. These accounts were then handed over to cyber fraudsters to route money.
Of the 22 identified accounts, 13 were allegedly registered in Kharat’s name, while 9 were linked to Bhujbal. A search of the Cyber Coordination Portal found 42 complaints across the country connected to these accounts. Transactions totalling approximately ₹7.42 crore were traced through them.
A case has been registered at Khar Police Station under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.
Mumbai Police are now investigating other people allegedly involved in supplying mule accounts, the beneficiaries of the transactions and other financial dealings linked to the racket.
