Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has successfully demonstrated an autonomous MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid) robot operating aboard a moving ship, in what the group described as the world’s first such demonstration. The trial highlights the potential for robots to support safer maritime inspections.

The 4-wheeled mobile robot completed testing aboard the multipurpose vessel HYUNDAI DUBAI in South Korea. The demonstration showed that MobED could navigate onboard despite constant vibration, vessel movement, and uneven surfaces.

The technology could eventually be used to inspect enclosed cargo holds and other hazardous or potentially toxic areas that may be unsafe for seafarers to enter.

Hyundai first unveiled the autonomous MobED in December 2025. The compact robot was designed for industrial and everyday applications, with the company preparing it for future mass production.

The latest trial was conducted in Changwon, South Korea, through a joint demonstration involving Korean Register (KR), HMM, HMM Ocean Service, and Goseong Engineering.

The test focused on whether a robot developed for land-based environments could operate reliably on a moving vessel. Beyond inspections, the technology could support cargo hold monitoring, condition checks, and material transportation in areas that are difficult or hazardous for crew members to access.

The demonstration represents another step toward integrating autonomous robots into smart ship operations, with the potential to reduce human exposure to dangerous maritime environments.
