Chinese AI company MiniMax has introduced H3, a new AI video-generation model that can process text, images, video, and audio, intensifying competition in China’s rapidly growing AI video market.
The Shanghai-based company said H3 can generate videos of up to 15 seconds in 2K resolution with native stereo sound. The model can also edit existing videos and transfer movements from one video to another using instructions and reference materials provided in different formats.
MiniMax announced that it plans to release H3’s model weights within the next few days, allowing developers and businesses to download, customise, and build on the underlying AI system. The move expands the open-weight approach adopted by several Chinese AI companies into video generation, where many leading models remain proprietary.
Founded in 2022, MiniMax is one of China’s leading AI startups, often referred to as one of the country’s “AI tigers.” The company became the 2nd startup from the group to go public when it listed in Hong Kong in January, following Z.AI.
According to an earlier report, MiniMax is also developing a 2.7-trillion-parameter language model.
Competition in China’s AI video generation market has intensified after ByteDance launched Seedance 2.0 earlier this year, followed by Kuaishou’s Kling 3.0. Both models support the creation of advanced videos using combinations of text, images, audio, and video inputs.
MiniMax said H3 is designed for commercial applications such as advertising, e-commerce, product design, and gaming. The company also claimed that generating 2K videos with H3 costs less than 1/3 of comparable mainstream AI video models.
As China’s AI industry works to reduce its reliance on U.S. semiconductor technology, MiniMax said H3 has been designed to run on multiple Chinese-made chips.
