SpaceX explores Starlink mobile expansion with plans to enter the US telecom market

SpaceX is planning to expand its Starlink business by launching a mobile service for consumers in the United States, according to a report by sources. The move could position the Elon Musk-led company as a direct competitor to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

The report stated that SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell shared the company’s plans with investors during a recent IPO roadshow. According to the report, SpaceX is exploring the launch of a Starlink retail mobile product and is also considering building its own terrestrial mobile network in the U.S.

SpaceX already provides direct-to-cell connectivity in partnership with T-Mobile, offering satellite-based coverage to improve internet access in remote locations. The proposed retail service would mark a significant expansion of its presence in the mobile communications market.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report. SpaceX also did not respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours.

The company’s mobile ambitions have been supported by its acquisition of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar. In September last year, SpaceX purchased licenses worth approximately $17 billion, followed by another acquisition valued at $2.6 billion in November. These deals provide access to EchoStar’s wireless spectrum, enabling the company to build a stronger and more affordable direct-to-cell service.

Earlier this month, brokerage firm Oppenheimer said Starlink’s expansion could disrupt the $1.6 trillion U.S. communications industry.

SpaceX’s growing valuation is largely driven by Starlink, which has more than 10 million subscribers worldwide, along with its launch business that analysts and investors say has transformed access to space. The planned mobile service reflects the company’s broader strategy to expand beyond satellite broadband and strengthen its position in the communications market.
