Microsoft is introducing a new workplace presence feature in Microsoft Teams that automatically updates an employee’s office location when they connect to their organization’s Wi-Fi network.
The feature, called “Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi,” began its General Availability rollout in June 2026 and is listed under Roadmap ID 488800. It expands on Teams’ existing workplace check-in functionality, which previously required users to manually check in to a building or reserved workspace.
With the new capability, Teams can recognize when a user connects to an approved corporate Wi-Fi network and automatically update their work location status to reflect the corresponding office or building. This removes the need for manual location updates and provides real-time workplace visibility within the platform.
The feature is currently available on Desktop and Mac devices and is being deployed across Worldwide Standard Multi-Tenant cloud environments.
Microsoft has designed the feature with a strong focus on privacy and user control. Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi is disabled by default and must be enabled by tenant administrators before employees can access it.
Even after activation at the organizational level, employees maintain full control over their location-sharing preferences and can choose to opt in or opt out at any time. The company says this layered consent approach helps address privacy concerns while supporting workplace compliance requirements.
As hybrid work environments continue to evolve, organizations often face challenges in determining which employees are working from the office. Microsoft says the new feature helps simplify workplace coordination by automatically providing location context within Teams.
The functionality can help employees schedule in-person meetings, identify colleagues working from the same office, and organize collaborative sessions more efficiently without requiring additional communication.
Unlike GPS-based tracking systems or badge-access monitoring tools, the Wi-Fi-based approach operates entirely within the Teams environment and does not expose location information outside the organization’s tenant.
Microsoft has advised organizations planning to deploy the feature to review their Teams Admin Center settings and clearly communicate the opt-in process and privacy controls to employees before enabling it across the organization.
