Oil India, CSIR collaboration aims to drive innovation across the energy sector

In a significant move to strengthen India’s energy ecosystem, Oil India Limited (OIL) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research, technology development, and innovation across the energy sector. The partnership aims to combine industry expertise with scientific research capabilities to support sustainable growth and enhance the country’s energy security.

The MoU was signed at OIL House in Noida by the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India Limited and the Director General of CSIR, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

The agreement establishes a framework for joint research and technology development focused on improving efficiency, sustainability, and operational performance across the energy value chain. Officials described the collaboration as a key step towards accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies in India’s energy sector.

Under the partnership, both organisations will work on research projects covering upstream and downstream oil and gas operations. Key focus areas include hydrocarbon exploration and production, reservoir optimisation techniques, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), refining and downstream technologies, operational efficiency improvements, and cost-effective energy solutions. The objective is to develop innovative technologies that enhance productivity while addressing operational challenges.

Beyond traditional oil and gas activities, the collaboration will also explore renewable energy opportunities and sustainable energy practices. The initiative aims to support the transition towards cleaner energy systems while maintaining long-term energy security.

The MoU further includes cooperation in the field of critical minerals, which play an important role in modern energy technologies, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing. Research in this area is expected to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities and reduce dependence on imports of strategic mineral resources.

Officials said the partnership will encourage knowledge sharing, technology transfer, and joint innovation initiatives. By combining practical industry experience with scientific expertise, both organisations aim to develop and deploy cutting-edge technologies that address current and future challenges in the energy sector.

Oil India stated that the collaboration aligns with its broader vision of enhancing technological capabilities through strategic partnerships. The initiative is expected to contribute to national goals related to energy security, technological self-reliance, and sustainable development while supporting India’s evolving energy landscape.
