Cyber fraud trail leaves jewellery showroom without gold or payment

What appeared to be a routine gold transaction has turned into a major fraud case after a jewellery showroom was left without both the gold and the payment following a cybercrime investigation.

According to a complaint filed with Navrangpura Police, a fraudster allegedly purchased gold worth ₹50 lakh from a jewellery showroom on CG Road using funds that were later found to be linked to a cyber fraud case.

Mukesh Kansara, manager of the showroom and a resident of Bopal, stated that he received a WhatsApp call on December 3 from a person enquiring about the price of 60 gold bars weighing 10 grams each. The caller later shared PAN and Aadhaar documents and requested the firm’s bank account details.

On December 4, ₹50 lakh was transferred to the showroom’s account through RTGS from an account belonging to Bengaluru resident Debasis Roy Chowdhury. Later that evening, a man identifying himself as Roy collected 52 gold biscuits weighing 626 grams and left the premises.

The issue came to light on December 9 when the jewellery firm’s bank account was frozen by Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police. Investigators found that Roy himself had been a victim of cyber fraud. An accused identified as Mohit Jain had allegedly siphoned ₹80 lakh from Roy’s account, with ₹50 lakh reportedly used to purchase the gold.

As a cyber fraud case had already been registered at the Whitefield CEN Crime Police Station in Bengaluru, a court ordered the frozen amount to be returned to Roy. The money was credited back to his account on December 17.

As a result, the jewellery showroom lost both the gold and the ₹50 lakh payment. Navrangpura Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.
