As online scams continue to rise, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new security feature for Android that could help users identify potentially fraudulent messages before they become victims of scams.
The upcoming feature, currently under development, is designed to analyze suspicious messages directly on the user’s device and generate scam alerts when potentially harmful content is detected. The system is expected to work entirely on-device, helping maintain user privacy while improving protection against fraudulent activities.
According to reports, the feature will monitor messages for patterns commonly associated with scams and deceptive behavior. If a message appears suspicious, WhatsApp may display a warning alert, allowing users to take extra caution before responding or interacting with the sender.
The on-device approach means message analysis will occur locally on the smartphone rather than on external servers. This is intended to support WhatsApp’s privacy-focused framework while adding another layer of security for users.
The feature is still in development and is not yet available to beta testers. However, its appearance in recent development builds suggests that the platform is actively exploring new ways to combat growing cybersecurity threats and online fraud attempts.
If launched, the scam alert tool could complement WhatsApp’s existing safety features, including spam detection, account reporting and suspicious contact warnings. The initiative reflects the company’s broader efforts to enhance user protection without compromising end-to-end encryption and privacy standards.
The development comes at a time when messaging platforms are facing increasing challenges from phishing attempts, impersonation scams and fraudulent financial schemes. By introducing proactive scam detection, WhatsApp aims to provide users with more tools to identify risks and make informed decisions while communicating online.
