South Korea is moving ahead with a major investment in artificial intelligence and robotics, with the Ministry of Science and ICT announcing a new long-term program focused on AI humanoid robots.
On May 18, the ministry said it will invest 50.4 billion won, approximately US$33.5 million, over the next 5 years to develop core technologies for AI-powered humanoid robots.
The initiative will be led by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology through 2030 and will include participation from universities and technology companies.
As part of the program, LG Electronics and Seoul-based wearable robot startup WIRobotics will work on building robot platforms and humanoid models designed for mass production.
Universities and LG AI Research will also collaborate on developing an AI model capable of helping robots understand and process visual, physical, verbal, and behavioral information.
The project will additionally use solid-state battery technology developed by LG Energy Solution to support robot performance and efficiency.
According to the ministry, the humanoid robots created under the program will later be tested in hospitals and nursing facilities. The robots are expected to assist with long-term and complex care-related tasks in healthcare environments.
The initiative reflects South Korea’s growing focus on combining AI, robotics, and advanced battery technologies to strengthen future innovation and automation capabilities.
