Malta is preparing to become the first country in the world to provide residents with a free 1-year subscription to ChatGPT Plus as part of a new artificial intelligence education initiative.
The program was announced by US-based AI company OpenAI and will be available to residents who complete a free AI training course designed to help people understand and use artificial intelligence tools effectively.
According to the announcement, the initiative will begin later this month and will gradually expand as more participants complete the training program.
The partnership between OpenAI and the Maltese government will also extend to Maltese citizens living abroad, allowing them to access the same benefits after completing the course.
The financial terms of the agreement between OpenAI and the Maltese government have not been publicly disclosed.
Maltese Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said, “We are turning an unfamiliar concept into practical assistance for our families, students, and workers.”
The minister further described the initiative as an important step toward making artificial intelligence more accessible across Malta.
The program highlights Malta’s growing focus on digital transformation and AI adoption, while also aiming to improve public understanding and everyday use of emerging technologies.
