LinkedIn restructures operations as nearly 5% workforce faces job cuts

Professional networking platform LinkedIn is cutting around 875 jobs, nearly 5% of its workforce, as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at improving operational focus and efficiency. The company, owned by Microsoft, said the changes are intended to help teams move faster and prioritise key business areas.

The layoffs will impact employees across marketing, engineering and product teams. According to the company, the restructuring is focused on strengthening long-term projects and improving infrastructure development.

Most of the job cuts are taking place in the EMEA region, which includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa, along with the APAC region covering Asia-Pacific markets.

LinkedIn is also shifting resources away from areas such as large-scale marketing campaigns and underutilised office spaces as part of its cost and operational restructuring strategy.

Commenting on the layoffs, Reid Hoffman said the situation is not solely linked to artificial intelligence replacing jobs. He stated that excessive hiring during the pandemic period was one of the major reasons behind the current workforce reduction.

Hoffman also cautioned companies against using AI as a convenient explanation for layoffs. The report noted that Sam Altman has referred to this growing trend as “AI washing.”

The restructuring reflects a wider shift across the technology sector, where companies are reassessing operational costs, workforce planning and long-term investment priorities.
