Microsoft is strengthening the AI capabilities inside its Edge browser with new Copilot-powered features for both mobile and desktop users. The latest update allows Copilot to access information from open tabs, helping users search, compare, and summarise content without switching between pages manually.
The company has introduced agentic AI capabilities to the Edge mobile app, enabling users to ask questions directly within the browser. Copilot can now pull context from active tabs and generate responses based on the information already open on the device. Similar to AI tools seen in other browsers, the feature can also compare details across multiple tabs.
Microsoft is also bringing its redesigned “new tab page” to the Edge mobile browser. Users will now be able to directly interact with Copilot through the search bar for faster AI assistance.
When browsing, users can tap the Copilot icon in the top-right corner to summarise content, locate specific information, or retrieve insights from several tabs simultaneously. For example, users can ask Copilot to plan a holiday using details gathered from different open travel pages.
The update also adds Vision and Voice tools across Edge desktop and mobile. With user permission, Copilot can view the device screen and respond based on what is displayed. Microsoft said users will see “clear visual cues” whenever Copilot is listening, viewing the screen, or generating responses.
Another major addition is long-term memory for Copilot in Edge. With permission, the AI assistant can access browsing history and previous conversations to provide more personalised assistance. This includes helping users continue shopping, revisit research, or return to unfinished browsing sessions.
Microsoft has also expanded the AI-backed Journeys feature to mobile devices. Journeys organises browsing history into topic-based collections with summaries and suggested next steps, allowing users to continue projects or research more efficiently.
On the desktop version of Edge, Microsoft introduced new productivity tools, including Study and Learn mode, which can simplify complex topics into guided study sessions and quizzes. The browser also gains a Writing Assistant feature for rewriting drafts and adjusting tone with AI support.
Additionally, Copilot can now convert tabs into podcasts for users in English-speaking markets, allowing them to listen to content while on the move.
