Over 130 foreign nationals arrested in Sri Lanka cybercrime raids

In a major enforcement move, Sri Lankan authorities have stepped up efforts to curb cross-border cybercrime, leading to large-scale arrests across key locations.

Police confirmed that more than 130 foreign nationals were detained over the weekend during coordinated raids in the suburbs of Colombo. The operations targeted suspected cybercrime networks operating from rented properties.

In Thalangama, 37 Chinese nationals were arrested, while in Rajagiriya, over 100 individuals from China, Vietnam, and other countries were taken into custody. Authorities allege that these groups were running fraud operations and using Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure as a base to target victims.

Officials noted that the country’s relatively lenient visa access may be attracting international cybercrime syndicates. These groups are believed to be leveraging local connectivity to conduct illegal online activities across borders.

The latest crackdown follows a similar operation in April, when police arrested 150 foreign nationals linked to cybercrime activities. This pattern suggests a rising trend of organised digital fraud networks operating within the country.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations progress.
