Meta reshapes workforce strategy as AI spending surges to $135 billion

As artificial intelligence becomes central to its strategy, Meta is preparing for significant workforce reductions while sharply increasing spending on AI initiatives.

The company informed employees through an internal memo on Thursday that it plans to cut 10% of its workforce, impacting around 8,000 employees. In addition to layoffs, Meta will also halt hiring for thousands of open positions it had previously planned to fill.

A major driver behind the decision is the company’s growing investment in AI. Meta is expected to spend $135 billion on AI projects this year, an amount roughly equal to its total AI spending over the past 3 years combined, according to a person familiar with the memo.

A company spokesperson confirmed the job cuts but did not provide further details.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had earlier संकेत these changes. In January, he highlighted how AI tools are significantly improving productivity. He noted that tasks that once required large teams can now be handled by a single individual using AI.

“I think that 2026 is going to be the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work,” Zuckerberg said.

Earlier reports had suggested that the company could cut more than 10,000 jobs this year. The latest memo confirms a substantial portion of those reductions.

The move reflects a broader shift within the company as it reallocates resources toward AI-driven growth, even as it restructures its workforce.
