Brazil regulator intensifies probe into Google’s AI-driven news content practices

Amid growing scrutiny of digital platforms, Brazil’s competition authority has decided to take a closer look at how news content is used within search ecosystems, especially as AI-driven features evolve.

Brazil’s antitrust regulator CADE has approved a deeper investigation into Alphabet’s Google over its use of journalistic content. The move aims to assess whether the company may be abusing its dominant position in the market.

CADE members supported a proposal by interim chief Diogo Thomson de Andrade to send the case back for formal administrative proceedings. This decision comes after noting changes in Google’s practices since the initial probe began in 2019, which originally focused on competition in search and news markets.

The earlier investigation examined Google’s automated collection of news content and how it displayed this information in search results. At that time, the general superintendence had suggested closing the case due to a lack of strong evidence.

However, the latest review highlights how Google’s approach has evolved, especially with the introduction of AI-powered features that summarise and present information directly within search interfaces.

According to the regulator’s analysis, this shift may increase the dependence of news publishers on Google’s platform for audience reach. It also raises concerns about whether the company is extracting value from third-party content without offering fair compensation.

The report suggests that such practices could amount to exploitative abuse of market dominance, particularly if publishers rely heavily on Google for visibility.

Google has not immediately responded to requests for comment on the development.

As AI continues to reshape how information is accessed and distributed, the outcome of this investigation could have wider implications for digital platforms and news publishers globally.
