Samsung has introduced a new audio control app called Samsung Sound, offering a redesigned interface for managing Wi-Fi speakers and soundbars. The app, which went live on Google Play in February, is positioned as an alternative to the sound management features within SmartThings.
Samsung Sound delivers a modern UI with soft gradients and a cleaner layout. However, it follows a distinct design language that feels disconnected from Samsung’s broader One UI ecosystem. While visually appealing, it does not fully align with the company’s unified app experience.
In terms of functionality, the app closely mirrors SmartThings’ soundbar manager but lacks several key features. Missing elements include IP control, Auto Power Off, Tap Sound shortcuts, and the ability to turn the soundbar OFF remotely. Notably, once the soundbar is turned ON, the power-off option disappears, limiting control.
Core features such as Sound Mode, Equalizer, Audio Sync, Advanced Sound Settings, Channel Level, Voice Guide, and Google Cast remain available. Users can also monitor network status and manage firmware updates.
A prominent “Open music app” button allows quick access to apps like Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube Music, but lacks customization and does not include Samsung Music, making the feature feel limited in purpose.
Samsung Sound and SmartThings operate independently, allowing users to manage devices across both apps without conflict. However, a pairing issue has been observed in some cases, particularly when soundbars are already connected to SmartThings. Removing the device from SmartThings before setup appears to resolve the issue.
While the app offers a faster and cleaner experience for some users, it still lacks the depth and completeness of SmartThings. Users who rely on advanced features may need to use both apps simultaneously.
Samsung Sound shows promise as a dedicated audio control platform, but in its current form, it remains a work in progress rather than a full replacement for SmartThings.
