In an effort to tackle rising cyber fraud, a new verification system is being introduced to help people confirm the authenticity of official notices.
The Central Bureau of Investigation will start issuing notices with special QR codes from May 1. These can be verified using an AI-powered chatbot called ABHAY. Officials said the move is aimed at preventing fake legal threats commonly used in cyber fraud cases.
QR code verification system to go live
From May 1, all CBI notices will include a QR code and an expiry date. If a person receives such a notice through WhatsApp, email, or SMS, they can scan the code using ABHAY on the official CBI website. The system will instantly check the agency’s internal database to confirm whether the document is genuine or fake.
Officials said this real-time verification system will make it harder for fraudsters to reuse old notices. The chatbot was launched during the 22nd D P Kohli Memorial Lecture on Monday.
Fraudsters using fake legal threats
Reports highlight a growing trend where cybercriminals impersonate CBI or other law enforcement officials. They send fake notices or make video calls, threaten digital arrest or legal action, and pressure victims to transfer money immediately.
This tactic relies on fear and urgency, especially targeting people who are not familiar with official procedures. Authorities noted that senior citizens and retirees are often the most vulnerable. Many victims lose life savings built over decades and may feel shock, distress, or hesitation in reporting such crimes.
Focus on citizen safety and awareness
Surya Kant described the initiative as a key safeguard against fraudsters posing as officials. He stressed the need for cybercrime systems to be simple, accessible, and responsive, with faster action and easier reporting processes.
People receiving such notices are advised not to panic or act immediately, avoid transferring money under pressure, and verify the document through ABHAY or official sources. Authorities also urge quick reporting of any suspicious activity.
