India achieves 1,000-km quantum communication milestone under National Quantum Mission: Jitendra Singh

India has successfully demonstrated a 1,000-kilometre quantum communication network under the National Quantum Mission, marking a major breakthrough in secure communication technologies, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Wednesday.

The milestone, achieved in less than two years since the mission’s launch in October 2024, places India among global leaders in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems and secure communication infrastructure.

Landmark Achievement in Secure Communication

The network was developed using indigenous technology by QNu Labs, a startup supported under the mission. The system enables ultra-secure communication by leveraging quantum encryption, making it highly resistant to cyber threats.

Department of Science and Technology (DST) Dr. Abhay Karandikar described the achievement as a “landmark advancement,” noting that it surpasses early-stage expectations and puts India on track to achieve its target of a 2,000-km quantum communication network within eight years.

The technology is designed to function across diverse terrains, including underwater and underground environments, enhancing its potential use in defence, financial systems, and critical infrastructure.

Boost to India’s Deep-Tech Ecosystem

In parallel, the government has expanded startup support under the mission, adding nine new ventures and taking the total number of supported startups to 17. These startups are working across areas such as quantum computing, sensing, communication, and advanced materials.

The newly supported ventures include Sense-XT, ORVISSEMI, QuBeats, Quantum AI Global, bloq, GDQ Labs, Quantum Biosciences, Bumble Bee Instruments Pvt. Ltd., and SAS Qute Electronics Pvt. Ltd.

Rising Momentum in R&D Funding

The review also highlighted strong traction in research and innovation funding under the government’s RDI framework.

The Technology Development Board (TDB) has received over 100 proposals within two months of launching its call for funding, reflecting growing industry interest in deep-tech innovation.

Similarly, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) has received nearly 200 applications, including projects in cancer research, gene therapy, and bio-manufacturing.

New Financing Models to Support Innovation

Officials noted the use of innovative financial instruments such as optionally convertible debt (OCD), which allows startups to access funding without immediate equity dilution while attracting private investment.

The government is focusing on scaling innovation in emerging sectors such as 6G, advanced manufacturing, space technologies, and biotechnology.

Focus on Transparency and Outreach

During the review meeting, Singh emphasized the need for transparent evaluation mechanisms and wider outreach to enhance participation in government-backed R&D initiatives.

He also called for better communication of India’s scientific achievements to strengthen the country’s global standing in emerging technologies.

Senior officials, including TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak, and BIRAC Managing Director Jitendra Kumar, were present at the meeting.

Strategic Push in Emerging Technologies

The developments are part of a broader government strategy to strengthen India’s deep-tech ecosystem through mission-driven programmes and public-private partnerships.

With quantum technologies emerging as a critical strategic frontier, alongside biotechnology and advanced communications, India is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation innovation.
