Uber deepens AWS partnership, adopts Amazon’s AI chips to power services

In a notable shift in cloud strategy, Uber has expanded its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), increasing its use of Amazon’s in-house chips to power key ride-sharing features.

As part of the deal, Uber will scale its use of AWS’s Graviton processors and begin testing Trainium3, Amazon’s AI chip positioned as an alternative to Nvidia’s offerings.

The move highlights intensifying competition among cloud providers, with Amazon strengthening its position against rivals like Google Cloud and Oracle.

Uber had earlier committed to transitioning its infrastructure from on-premise data centres to cloud platforms, signing multi-year agreements with Oracle and Google in 2023. The company had been actively shifting workloads to these platforms while adopting ARM-based computing environments.

Despite that strategy, the expanded AWS deal signals a growing preference for Amazon’s custom-designed chips, particularly as companies seek cost efficiency and performance advantages in AI and compute-heavy workloads.

AWS’s Graviton chips are designed for energy efficiency, while Trainium focuses on AI model training, positioning Amazon as a serious contender in the AI infrastructure space.

The development also reflects a broader industry trend where cloud providers are investing in proprietary silicon to differentiate their offerings.

Uber now joins companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Apple in increasing adoption of AWS’s AI chips. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously indicated that Trainium has already become a multi-billion-dollar business.

The deal underscores how chip innovation is becoming a key factor in cloud competition, influencing how large enterprises choose their infrastructure partners.
