Meghalaya partners with Starlink to expand satellite internet in remote regions

In a major push to improve digital access, the Government of Meghalaya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink India to strengthen internet connectivity across the state, especially in remote and difficult terrains.

Sharing the update, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the agreement is a key step toward closing connectivity gaps. “Glad to witness the MoU Signing between Government of Meghalaya and Starlink India. Over the past 8 years, we have strengthened infrastructure, embraced technology, and improved governance, reducing processes that once took 30 days to just 3 days. Yet, connecting our remotest schools, health centres, and communities remains a challenge,” he said.

He added that the partnership will introduce advanced satellite connectivity to address these issues. “This initiative will help save lives through better healthcare access, improve learning opportunities for students, and enhance livelihoods for farmers and rural communities,” he said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister also stated that the government is “Shillong into a hub for IT and technology in the Northeast, creating opportunities for our talented youth and building a strong digital ecosystem for the future.”

Starlink delivers internet using satellites in low Earth orbit, removing the need for traditional infrastructure like mobile towers or fibre cables. This makes it suitable for regions like Meghalaya, where terrain and location make network deployment difficult.

With small satellite dishes, even remote villages can access high-speed internet. This is expected to improve education by enabling access to online classes and digital platforms, and enhance healthcare through telemedicine services.

The initiative is also likely to boost economic opportunities by supporting online work, digital businesses, and access to wider markets, helping reduce migration to cities.

In addition, improved connectivity will strengthen governance by enabling better access to digital services, government schemes, and financial inclusion. Satellite internet can also remain operational during disasters such as landslides and floods, making it more reliable in crisis situations.
