Google has begun a wider rollout of its new “Ask Maps” feature, making it accessible to users across India and the US. The update comes shortly after its initial announcement alongside “Immersive Navigation,” marking another step in bringing AI-powered experiences into everyday navigation.
The feature is integrated within Google Maps and is powered by Gemini. It introduces a conversational interface that allows users to ask detailed, real-world questions—going beyond traditional map searches.
According to Google, “Ask Maps” is designed to handle complex queries that typical map tools could not address earlier. The rollout gained momentum over the past week, with many users reporting access just before the weekend.
The tool can be accessed directly below the search bar within Google Maps on both Android and iOS devices in India and the US. However, it is not yet available in other regions, and desktop support is expected at a later stage.
Google has also shared sample prompts to demonstrate how users can interact with the feature:
- Planning a date with specific preferences such as location, ambience, and nearby lounge options
- Finding a quiet bar within 1 mile suitable for reading, without live music or crowds
- Identifying the best spot to photograph the NYC skyline based on current sunlight positioning
- Creating a scenic walking or running route timed to reach a destination at sunset
- Building a 3-day travel itinerary with cultural, historical, and shopping recommendations
- Searching for a dinner spot within 20 mins that is highly rated, has availability for 4, and offers outdoor seating
These examples highlight how “Ask Maps” blends AI with location data to deliver more personalised and contextual recommendations.
With this rollout, Google is positioning Maps as not just a navigation tool, but a smart assistant for planning experiences, discovering places, and making decisions in real time.
