Elon Musk announces launch of Tesla’s Terafab semiconductor facility in 7 days

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has announced that the company’s ambitious Terafab project, a massive in-house semiconductor manufacturing facility, will be launched in 7 days.

In a post on X, Musk wrote, “Terafab Project launches in 7 days.” The announcement marks a key milestone in Tesla’s plan to gain greater control over the production of advanced artificial intelligence chips.

The Terafab, short for “tera-scale fabrication plant,” is expected to be significantly larger than Tesla’s existing Gigafactories. The facility will combine logic chip manufacturing, memory fabrication, and advanced chip packaging within a single large-scale plant in the United States.

Musk has said the project is necessary to support the enormous demand for custom AI chips needed to power Tesla’s expanding technology ecosystem. These chips are expected to support systems such as Full Self-Driving software, Robotaxi networks, Optimus humanoid robots, and the Dojo supercomputer cluster.

The project is also intended to address what Musk has described as a future chip supply bottleneck. Tesla currently depends on external semiconductor manufacturers including TSMC and Samsung. However, Musk has highlighted geopolitical risks and rising chip demand as reasons for building Tesla’s own manufacturing capacity.

Musk first presented the Terafab concept during Tesla’s 2025 annual shareholder meeting, where he said the company may need to build a facility far larger than its current factories.

“So I think we may have to do a Tesla Terafab. It’s like Giga but way bigger. I can’t see any other way to get to the volume of chips that we are looking for,” Musk said.

He also reiterated the plan during the company’s January 2026 earnings call, indicating that a major announcement about the project would follow later in the year.

The Terafab initiative represents a major step in Tesla’s vertical integration strategy, pushing the electric vehicle manufacturer deeper into the semiconductor industry. Construction of the facility is expected to begin immediately after the official launch, with the long-term goal of reaching chip production levels comparable to leading global semiconductor manufacturers.

Following the announcement, Tesla shares rose in after-hours trading, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s strategy to independently secure the hardware required for its AI-driven technologies.
