FBI probes malware hidden in Steam video games, seeks potential victims

Authorities in the United States are investigating a cybersecurity incident involving malicious software hidden in video games distributed through Steam. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that its Seattle Division is working to identify people who may have downloaded the infected games.

Investigators believe the suspected hacker primarily targeted users between May 2024 and January 2026. The agency is now asking potential victims to come forward if they believe they may have installed the affected titles.

List of suspected games

The FBI has identified several games believed to be connected to the cybercriminal. The titles include BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.

Officials have requested that anyone who may have downloaded these games, or whose minor dependents may have installed them, complete a short reporting form so authorities can assess the impact of the incident.

The FBI has assured that the identities of individuals who report the issue will remain confidential. Based on the responses received, investigators may contact affected users to gather additional details about the downloads and possible malware activity.

The agency also noted that it is legally required to identify victims of federal crimes during investigations. Individuals who were affected could be eligible for certain services, restitution, and rights under federal or state law.

Similar incident reported in 2025

This is not the first time malware has appeared on the gaming marketplace owned by Valve. In 2025, several seemingly simple games on Steam were discovered to have secretly compromised users before they were eventually removed from the platform.

The latest investigation highlights the importance of caution when downloading new games online. It also raises concerns about the need for stronger security measures on major digital distribution platforms.
