India and Europe have taken another step in expanding their space cooperation, with the Indian space agency and the European space agency signing a new agreement focused on Earth observation missions.
The agreement, titled “ESA–ISRO Arrangement concerning Joint Calibration and Validation Activities and Scientific Studies for Earth Observation Missions,” was signed virtually on March 4. It was formalised by ISRO Scientific Secretary M. Ganesh Pillai and ESA Director for Earth Observation Programmes Simonetta Cheli.
The collaboration will focus on joint calibration and validation activities along with scientific studies related to upcoming Earth observation missions. These efforts aim to improve the accuracy and reliability of satellite data used for environmental monitoring, climate studies and disaster management.
Officials said the agreement builds on a long-standing partnership between the 2 space agencies, which first began in 1978 and was renewed in 2002. Over the years, cooperation between the agencies has expanded to areas such as Earth observation, navigation systems, ground station support and human spaceflight collaboration.
Simonetta Cheli said the agreement comes at an important time, especially with upcoming missions such as ESA’s Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) satellite. The mission is designed to improve scientific understanding of vegetation biology and ecosystem health through advanced satellite observations.
- Ganesh Pillai also highlighted the broader cooperation between the two organisations. He noted ESA’s support for several Indian missions, including Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1, as well as collaboration through ISRO’s deep space antenna facilities.
According to officials, the new agreement will enable joint scientific studies and collaborative observation campaigns, helping researchers better understand Earth’s ecosystems, climate patterns and environmental changes using satellite data.
