PhonePe launches ‘On-The-Go’ RuPay NCMC card for seamless public transport payments

In a move aimed at strengthening digital transit payments, PhonePe has introduced the new ‘On-The-Go’ RuPay NCMC card. The launch supports India’s One Nation One Card initiative and focuses on making public transport payments more digital and convenient.

The prepaid card enables tap-and-pay transactions across NCMC-enabled services such as metros, buses, trains, tolls, and parking. It is designed to function even without an internet connection, allowing commuters to make payments smoothly during travel.

The ‘On-The-Go’ card stores value directly on its chip and can hold a maximum balance of ₹2,000. It also supports offline transactions of up to ₹500. According to PhonePe, the cards are issued instantly, making them easily accessible for daily commuters.

Initially, the card will be available at Hyderabad Metro ticket counters through a partnership with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL).

Speaking about the launch, Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, said the card allows quick ‘Tap-and-Pay’ transactions across transit providers in India. He highlighted that the card works offline using the stored balance.

The launch also marks a strategic step for PhonePe as it expands into the transit payments segment. Through this initiative, the company aims to integrate its digital wallet ecosystem with national public transport systems and support wider adoption of digital payments.
