Expanding access to its AI-powered development tools, OpenAI has introduced the Codex app for Windows users, bringing its agent-based coding platform to another major operating system. The release comes about 1 month after the company launched the same application for macOS.
The San Francisco-based AI company announced that the app is now available on the Microsoft Store, allowing developers who use the Windows operating system to run agentic coding workflows directly from their devices.
In a post shared on X, the company confirmed the launch and said, “Get the full Codex app experience on Windows with a native agent sandbox and support for Windows developer environments in PowerShell.”
The Codex app works as a central workspace for AI-assisted software development. It allows developers to run multiple AI agents in parallel across projects. Users can manage long-horizon tasks, review code differences in a single interface, and continue working within their existing development environments without using workarounds such as Windows Subsystem for Linux or virtual machines.
The underlying system behind the app is Codex, a cloud-based software engineering agent first introduced in April 2025. The technology is powered by large language models trained specifically for coding tasks.
Codex can translate natural-language prompts into functional code, propose pull requests, detect and fix bugs, generate tests, and assist with exploratory development across repositories. The model also powers widely used developer tools such as GitHub Copilot and the Codex command-line interface.
The platform supports multiple programming languages including Python, JavaScript, Go and others. Developers can assign agents to complex coding projects, whether building full applications or debugging large codebases.
The system also supports multi-threaded operations. This allows different AI agents to work simultaneously on separate parts of a project. Real-time progress tracking and steering features give developers visibility and control, similar to collaborating with a team of specialised programmers.
Access to the app depends on subscription tiers. Windows users on Free and Go plans can use the basic features, while those on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans receive higher rate limits and additional premium capabilities.
