A shift in tone is coming to ChatGPT. After growing user frustration over overly emotional and reassuring replies, OpenAI says its new GPT-5.3 Instant model will significantly cut down on what it describes as “cringe” language and “preachy disclaimers.”
In recent months, users complained that the earlier GPT-5.2 Instant model often responded as if they were in distress, even when they were simply asking for information. Replies frequently included reminders to breathe or statements such as “First of all — you’re not broken.” Many users said this tone felt condescending and assumed a mental state that was not accurate. As one Reddit user wrote, “no one has ever calmed down in all the history of telling someone to calm down.” Discussions across social platforms suggested that some subscribers were frustrated enough to cancel their plans.
According to the official release notes, GPT-5.3 Instant focuses on improving user experience rather than benchmark performance. The update emphasizes better tone, improved relevance and smoother conversational flow. These changes may not always appear in technical evaluations, but they directly affect how users feel when interacting with the chatbot. OpenAI acknowledged the criticism publicly, stating on X, “We heard your feedback loud and clear, and 5.3 Instant reduces the cringe.” In its example comparison, the company showed how GPT-5.2 began with emotional reassurance, while GPT-5.3 responded by acknowledging difficulty without assuming distress.
The update comes as OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging that chatbot interactions contributed to negative mental health effects, including cases involving suicide. The company has attempted to introduce guardrails to encourage safer conversations. However, balancing empathy with direct, factual answers remains challenging. Many users argue that when seeking information, they prefer clarity over emotional guidance. With GPT-5.3 Instant, OpenAI appears to be recalibrating ChatGPT’s tone to feel less intrusive and more practical.
