Satellite internet provider Starlink has announced plans to begin launching its Direct-to-Cell satellites in 2027, aiming to enable mobile phones to connect directly with satellites for communication services.
The update was shared during Mobile World Congress 2026, where Michael Nicolls confirmed the timeline for deploying the new satellite system.
According to Nicolls, the satellites will be launched into low-earth orbit using the Starship. The deployment will begin in mid-2027 and will allow the company to rapidly expand its satellite constellation.
“We’ll begin launching in mid-2027 with Starship, we’ll be able to deploy the constellation very quickly,” Nicolls said.
The initial phase of the rollout is expected to involve around 1,200 satellites designed to support direct mobile connectivity.
The Direct-to-Cell technology was first announced in 2024. It is designed to allow standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites without requiring additional hardware.
With this capability, users will be able to access voice calling, SMS messaging and mobile data services through satellite connectivity.
Nicolls also highlighted the broader objective of the project. “The goal of Starlink mobile, which will be enabled by the second-generation constellation, is to provide a terrestrial like connectivity when you’re connected to the satellite system,” he said.
Currently, Starlink operates a satellite constellation of more than 9,000 satellites in low-earth orbit. This network already includes around 600 satellites equipped with direct-to-cell technology.
The upcoming expansion is expected to strengthen satellite-based mobile connectivity and extend network coverage in areas where traditional telecom infrastructure is limited.
