The UAE has announced a major partnership with Colossal Biosciences aimed at advancing global conservation, biodiversity protection and scientific research. The collaboration will support efforts in environmental protection, de-extinction and science driven solutions to safeguard life on Earth, while reinforcing the UAE’s growing role in sustainability and innovation.
The initiative marks a significant step in conservation and biotechnology, highlighting a shared commitment to science, ecological resilience and species preservation across the Middle East, Africa and beyond. As part of the programme, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, has directed the establishment of a laboratory and the Colossal BioVault as a permanent feature at Dubai’s Museum of the Future. The facility will serve as a hub for research and preservation, giving scientists and innovators access to advanced tools to address global biodiversity challenges.
“I believe the future belongs to those who harness technology and innovation to address our greatest challenges,” said Museum of the Future Executive Director Majed Al Mansoori. “By working with Colossal Biosciences, leaders in synthetic biology and conservation, we are taking a bold step to advance science that safeguards our planet, restores ecosystems, and builds a sustainable legacy for future generations.” He added that in its first year, the initiative will focus on fieldwork and DNA research across species, strengthening long term biodiversity protection efforts.
The Colossal BioVault and World Preservation Lab is a nine figure initiative in the UAE, alongside an initial UAE led contribution to Colossal’s latest funding round. By 2050, nearly 50% of Earth’s species could face extinction, a risk this project aims to address through a secure and scalable global backup system. “The UAE’s deep commitment to innovation, conservation and technological advancement is truly inspiring,” said Ben Lamm, Co Founder and CEO of Colossal Biosciences. The BioVault will preserve millions of samples from over 10000 species, starting with the 100 most imperilled species, using robotics, AI monitoring and cryopreservation, while engaging visitors at the Museum of the Future in real time scientific work.
