India prepares for first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight ahead of 2027 target

Progress toward India’s first human spaceflight is moving through a critical testing phase as engineers focus on safety and system readiness. The national space agency is advancing work on the first uncrewed mission under the Gaganyaan programme, planned before the crewed launch in 2027.

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the Gaganyaan programme is scheduled for 2027 and will be preceded by 3 uncrewed missions. “Gaganyaan programme is planned in 2027. Before that, three uncrewed missions are planned. We are working towards the first uncrewed mission,” he told reporters on Jan. 30, 2026.

He said scientists are currently running extensive tests to ensure mission success. “There are lots of tests happening. You know safety of the Gaganyatri is very, very important. So, we have to be very careful. We have to qualify every system. In the rocket system, we have to score one hundred out of one hundred,” he said.

“Our aim is that [the success of Gaganyaan]. We have to do a perfect job. We are working towards that,” he added.

Gaganyaan is India’s first human spaceflight programme. It aims to send a 3-member crew on a 3-day mission and return them safely to Earth.

On the PSLV-C62 mission, which faced an anomaly in the third stage after lift-off on Jan. 12, he said teams are reviewing all mission data to correct issues. The PSLV-C62/EOS N1 mission suffered a setback after a problem was detected in the third stage, and a detailed technical analysis is under way.
