OpenAI to retire GPT-4o and older models from ChatGPT

In a step that reflects its shift toward newer AI systems, OpenAI has announced plans to phase out several legacy models from ChatGPT, including the widely used GPT-4o.

The company has issued a 2-week notice confirming that GPT-4o and other older models will be removed from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. Along with GPT-4o, OpenAI will also retire GPT-5 (Instant and Thinking), GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini from the chatbot platform. OpenAI clarified that there will be no immediate impact on APIs, allowing developers to continue using these models for now.

GPT-4o was launched in May 2024 and quickly gained popularity for its warm tone and natural, conversational style. Many long-time users preferred it for creative ideation and everyday interactions. When the model was briefly removed last year following the rollout of GPT-5, users expressed strong opposition across online platforms.

At the time, OpenAI responded by restoring the model, saying, “We brought GPT4o back after hearing clear feedback from a subset of Plus and Pro users, who told us they needed more time to transition key use cases, like creative ideation, and that they preferred GPT4o’s conversational style and warmth.”

Since then, user behavior has changed as newer models improved in speed and capability. OpenAI said its internal data shows that only “about 0.1% of users choose GPT-4o daily,” while “GPT-5.2, which has become the default model for most daily tasks.”

The company said focusing on widely used tools is essential, adding, “Retiring models is never easy, but it allows us to focus on improving the models most people use today.”

To reduce the impact of GPT-4o’s exit, OpenAI has introduced customization options in newer models. These include “base styles and tones like Friendly, and controls for things like warmth and enthusiasm,” allowing users to recreate a more personal and conversational experience.

CEO Sam Altman had earlier assured users that advance notice would be given before older models were permanently removed. This announcement follows that commitment, giving users time to adjust workflows and preferences.

As OpenAI accelerates its focus on next-generation AI, the retirement of GPT-4o marks the close of a familiar chapter, even as ChatGPT moves toward faster and more capable systems.
