Tesla signals higher FSD costs as subscription model takes centre stage

A shift in pricing and access is on the way for Tesla’s driver assistance technology, as the company signals changes tied closely to future capability upgrades. Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving subscription will not remain at its current price for long.

Musk said the $99 per month cost for supervised Full Self-Driving will increase as the technology advances. In a post on X, he wrote, “I should also mention that the $99/month for supervised FSD will rise as FSD’s capabilities improve.” He added that the real value increase will come when vehicles can operate fully on their own without human supervision.

Tesla is also preparing to end one-time purchases of Full Self-Driving. From February 14, 2026, customers will no longer be able to buy FSD outright and will instead have to subscribe on a monthly basis. For users who already have Enhanced Autopilot, the FSD add-on will cost $49 per month. For others, the subscription will remain at $99 per month. Basic cruise control will continue to be offered at no cost.

The move marks a major change in how Tesla monetises its self-driving technology. Over the years, Musk has repeatedly promised fully autonomous vehicles and has frequently adjusted timelines as the system evolved. The price of FSD has also seen several changes, once reaching a high of $15,000 before later dropping to $8,000, and now shifting entirely to a subscription model.

The subscription-only strategy is closely linked to Musk’s broader plans for Tesla’s future. He has previously outlined a target of reaching 10 million active FSD subscribers, a milestone that would support his large pay package and long-term vision for the company.

As Tesla continues to refine its self-driving software, customers can expect both rising capabilities and higher subscription costs in the years ahead.
