Election Commission launches ECI Net app to curb misinformation and boost poll transparency

At a time when misinformation poses growing risks to democratic systems, India has taken a major digital step to strengthen trust in its electoral process.

The Election Commission of India on Thursday launched ECI Net, a unified digital platform aimed at countering election-related misinformation and improving transparency. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar unveiled the platform and described it as a critical tool to address misleading and false information during elections.

The launch took place at the International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM-2026) at Bharat Mandapam, where election management bodies and institutions from across the world are participating.

Addressing the conference, the Chief Election Commissioner said ECI Net has been developed as a single, integrated platform that brings together all election-related information and services. He said the application has undergone detailed legal scrutiny and fully complies with constitutional and statutory provisions governing elections in India.

According to the CEC, the platform will help voters, political stakeholders, and officials access verified, authoritative, and real-time election information, making it an effective response to the spread of misinformation.

To ensure wider access, ECI Net is available in English and 22 Indian languages. Officials said this multilingual approach will improve voter awareness, reduce confusion caused by false narratives, and strengthen public confidence in the electoral system.

While presenting the platform to international delegates, the Chief Election Commissioner also offered India’s technical cooperation to countries interested in developing similar digital election management systems.

Highlighting India’s experience in managing large-scale elections, he said the country is ready to support other Election Management Bodies in adopting technology-driven solutions suited to their local needs. He added that platforms like ECI Net can improve efficiency, transparency, and credibility in election administration globally.

Election Commissioner Dr S.S. Sandhu said ECI Net would act as a strong trust-building instrument by making authentic election information easily accessible to citizens and stakeholders. Election Commissioner Dr Vivek Joshi noted that forums such as IICDEM-2026 allow election authorities worldwide to learn from global best practices and digital innovation.

Providing technical insights, Director General (IT) Dr Seema Khanna said the platform is designed to enhance transparency, efficiency, reliability, and public confidence. She said ECI Net integrates multiple services and data points, reducing fragmentation and improving the user experience.

Officials said the platform reflects a proactive institutional response to the rising challenge of election misinformation and marks a significant digital milestone in India’s election management framework.
