OpenAI adds tab grouping and smart search to ChatGPT Atlas browser

A quieter but meaningful upgrade is rolling out to OpenAI’s agentic browser, ChatGPT Atlas, aimed at making everyday browsing smoother and more organised for users.

OpenAI announced a fresh set of updates for ChatGPT Atlas through a post on X. The latest release introduces tab grouping, a redesigned vertical search results layout, and a new “Auto” search option that allows the browser to switch between ChatGPT and Google automatically. OpenAI’s update also brings multiple performance and usability enhancements to improve daily browsing.

According to Adam Fry, product lead for ChatGPT Atlas, users can now group tabs to better manage multiple open pages. Tab groups can be created by right-clicking on a tab or by selecting several tabs at once. These groups can be named and customised with emojis, making them easier to spot and manage during heavy browsing sessions.

Search within Atlas has also been refined. Results are now shown in a vertical, stacked format, which improves readability and makes scanning links simpler. Alongside this, Atlas introduces an “Auto” option for the default search engine. When enabled, the browser decides whether a query should be answered directly by ChatGPT or redirected to Google, based on the type of search.

OpenAI said the update includes performance optimisations that lower memory usage and reduce slowdowns, especially when many tabs are open. The “Ask ChatGPT” sidebar now features new quick suggestions, allowing users to start common tasks faster without typing full prompts.

Beyond the headline features, several smaller improvements are part of the release. These include better page zoom controls, easier tab sharing during video calls, improved profile management, enhanced developer tools, expanded keyboard shortcuts, and other interface refinements.

Looking ahead, Adam Fry hinted at features planned for future updates. These include proper support for multiple ChatGPT logins, better window management, mobile-focused improvements, and more advanced agent capabilities designed to expand what Atlas can do as an intelligent browser.

The updates signal OpenAI’s push to position ChatGPT Atlas as a more capable and practical tool for daily web use.
