Google Photos adds “Me Meme” to turn your photos into AI-generated personalised memes

Bringing meme culture straight into its photo app, Google has started rolling out a new Google Photos feature that lets users create personalised memes starring themselves using AI.

Called “Me Meme,” the tool uses generative AI to place a user’s photo into meme-style templates and add captions, helping them create funny and shareable images. The feature was first reported in October 2025 and has now launched 3 months later. It adds to Google Photos’ growing list of AI features, including Create with AI, Photo to video, Remix, Collage, and more.

A Google community manager announced the update on a support page. Me Meme is part of a wider set of AI-assisted tools already available in Google Photos, where users can generate stylised edits, get quick enhancement suggestions, and create automated photo outputs. For now, Me Meme is available only in the US.

The feature begins with a selected photo of a person. It then places that image into popular meme formats with funny or relatable text. Users can pick from a catalogue of preset meme styles or upload their own templates. They can also edit the captions to better match the joke or message.

To use Me Meme, a user selects a portrait or a photo of themselves, taps the “Create” or “Meme” option, and chooses a template or adds their own. The AI then generates a meme image by fitting the chosen photo into the template and adding text above and below in the classic meme format. Google said the templates and captions are designed to be fun and shareable, while respecting original meme formats commonly used on social media.

Google also said Me Meme is optional and works only on photos a user chooses. It does not create memes automatically without the user starting the process. The company added that AI generation stays within the Photos app unless the user decides to save or share the result.

The support announcement did not confirm whether these generated memes will count toward Google Photos storage limits. However, standard policy suggests created items are treated as new files.
