Commuters travelling between Kolkata and Howrah can now stay connected throughout their journey, as Airtel has rolled out uninterrupted mobile connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the Second Hooghly Bridge. The telecom operator is the first to deliver consistent network coverage across this key urban link.
The deployment was carried out through a public–private partnership with the Government of West Bengal, the Public Works Department, the West Bengal Police Traffic Department, and the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners. The collaboration focused on eliminating long-standing connectivity gaps on the bridge and ensuring smooth voice and data services.
To create “zero drop zones” across the entire stretch, Airtel implemented targeted infrastructure upgrades. These included laying 1.3 km of fiber optic cable along the bridge and installing network antennas on 6 poles to provide even signal coverage. The upgrades are designed to support thousands of daily commuters who rely on the corridor.
Officials have described the initiative as an important addition to urban infrastructure. Vidyasagar Setu handles heavy daily traffic, and reliable mobile connectivity is seen as essential for commuter safety, convenience, and emergency responsiveness.
With the improved network, users can access navigation and traffic apps, use digital services while on the move, and stay connected during emergencies. The project is expected to support better traffic management and faster communication for both commuters and authorities.
The deployment forms part of Airtel’s wider network expansion in West Bengal. Over the past 3 years, the company says it has added more than 5,250 new network sites across the state. These investments cover roads, bridges, transport hubs, and public spaces, with a focus on improving speed, coverage, and overall user experience.
Commenting on the milestone, Ayan Sarkar, CEO – Bharti Airtel, West Bengal and Odisha, said:
“This deployment showcases Airtel’s engineering strength and our commitment to enabling smart infrastructure for the city. Vidyasagar Setu is one of Kolkata’s busiest transport corridors, and uninterrupted connectivity here is critical—not just for commuters, but for emergency services, traffic management, and public safety. Airtel is proud to make this possible.”
