India has taken a key step towards preparing its armed forces for future warfare by laying out a structured plan to adopt quantum technologies across defence operations.
On Thursday, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan released the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework, a policy roadmap that defines how quantum technologies will be integrated into the Army, Navy and Air Force. The framework reflects the military’s push to stay ahead in an era of fast-evolving and technology-driven battlefields.
The policy outlines the adoption of quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices across the three services. Officials said the framework is designed to align defence priorities with India’s National Quantum Mission, under which the defence sector is expected to play a major role alongside civilian research bodies and industry.
According to the policy document, quantum technologies are expected to support a wide range of military applications. These include secure communication systems, advanced computing capabilities, precision sensing tools, and next-generation defence platforms, all seen as critical to maintaining operational superiority.
A strong focus has been placed on joint planning and integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force. The framework also calls for close coordination with government departments, research institutions and private industry through a civil-military fusion approach, aimed at accelerating innovation and deployment.
The roadmap further details clear milestones and governance mechanisms to guide the development, testing and operational use of quantum technologies. These measures are intended to reduce duplication of efforts and ensure efficient use of resources across the services.
Indian defence planners have repeatedly underlined the growing importance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities and quantum systems, especially as major global powers continue to invest heavily in these domains.
The release of the framework comes as India works to strengthen indigenous research and development while ensuring seamless interoperability between military and civilian innovation ecosystems.
The event was attended by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, and Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit.
