A new update from Canva is giving its interface a distinctly internet driven tone. On 22 January, the online design and publishing platform introduced a fresh English language option shaped by popular online slang and digital culture, aimed at users who are deeply immersed in internet trends and expressions.
Named ‘English (chronically online)’, the feature is described by the company as “inspired by the internet native generation and the language they’ve adopted.” According to a company statement, this language setting changes the entire user experience by turning “every button, tooltip and AI chat into internet vocabulary,” offering a playful and familiar environment for younger and highly online users.
The move reflects how users are already interacting with Canva’s AI tools. Many have been using prompts such as “main character energy” to spark creative ideas. The company noted that online interest in slang terms has grown sharply over the past year. Searches for phrases like “slay”, “rizz” and “spill the tea” have increased by 98%, 88% and 47% respectively, highlighting rising demand for internet style language in digital tools.
Along with the language update, Canva has also launched a redesigned interface and a new set of “extremely online templates” that include hidden easter eggs. The ‘English (chronically online)’ option is available to both free and paid users. To activate it, users can go to Settings, open the Language section and select “English (chronically online)”. This update builds on earlier AI focused launches, including the voice enabled AI coding tool and AI powered spreadsheet generator introduced in April last year as part of Canva’s Visual Suite 2.0.
