India’s technology centres are no longer working quietly in the background. They are now shaping core products, security strategy and global decisions for some of the world’s leading fintech and cybersecurity firms.
In a recent discussion, senior leaders from Mimecast and Greenlight Financial explained how India based global capability centres have moved far beyond support roles. These centres were once seen mainly as compliance and risk extensions of headquarters. Today, they are designed for full ownership, faster decision making and direct alignment with global goals. Sunil Shirguppi, senior vice president and India country head at Greenlight Financial, said, “Whatever teams or functions we have set up here, we have made sure that there is complete front to back ownership.” The India hub includes engineering, security, product, design and operations and this structure has helped the company adapt quickly as the market evolves.
Shivi Mithal, vice president and country manager India at Mimecast, highlighted a similar approach. Mimecast’s India centre was created as a true global capability centre, with all roles designed to serve worldwide needs. Leadership decisions are based on skills rather than location. At Greenlight, artificial intelligence tools are making it easier to test and launch ideas quickly. “Because of this AI, all the tools that are out there…building these quick POCs and then trying them out on our customers has become very easy right now,” Shirguppi said. For its mobile first platform with more than 2000000 paying subscribers, tracking user behaviour through detailed data tagging is critical.
Cybersecurity work at Mimecast relies heavily on analytics and speed. “Every time it is going to be a new kind of attack,” Mithal said, referring to threats such as business email compromise detection. When a threat is identified in one region, security policies are strengthened globally for all customers. To respond faster, Mimecast uses a ‘kite’ structure with more experienced engineers. “If we have too many junior members they would take time. No, so we do not have a pyramid, we have a kite.” At Greenlight, all global risk operations are run from India, even though the company does not yet serve local customers.
