Netflix plans app revamp with short-form videos to boost user engagement

As streaming platforms compete harder for user attention, Netflix is preparing a mobile app update that leans into short-form video consumption to keep viewers engaged even before they press play.

During its Q4 earnings call, Netflix confirmed that an upcoming redesign of its Android and iOS apps will introduce TikTok-style vertical video feeds. The update is aimed at increasing engagement by allowing users to scroll through short clips before committing to a full show or movie.

Speaking during the earnings call, CEO Greg Peters said the redesign, with a stronger focus on short-form video, is intended to “better serve the expansion of [Netflix] over the decade to come.” The announcement was later reported by a technology publication.

Vertical video feeds are already a familiar format across major platforms. TikTok popularised the format, while Instagram offers Reels and YouTube features Shorts. Netflix joining this trend marks a notable shift for a platform traditionally focused on long-form content.

According to the company, the short videos will feature clips from Netflix shows and video podcasts. These snippets are expected to help users discover new content or provide quick entertainment during short breaks, such as waiting periods during daily routines.

The move aligns with broader industry observations that Netflix has been adapting to changing viewing habits. Reports from film and TV professionals have suggested the company has increasingly leaned into what is often described as doomscrolling behaviour. Netflix has reportedly explored “second-screen shows,” designed with simpler dialogue and reduced plot complexity to hold attention even when viewers are simultaneously scrolling through other apps.

Seen in this context, the addition of short-form video fits into Netflix’s wider strategy to sustain attention throughout the user journey, including the often-overlooked moment of browsing for what to watch next.

Netflix has not shared detailed information about how the feature will appear or function within the app. The company only confirmed that the redesigned app for Android and iOS is expected to roll out sometime in 2026.
