Bengaluru cyber police secure court release, return ₹2.16 crore lost in email spoofing scam

Acting swiftly on a corporate fraud complaint, the Bengaluru cyber crime police have solved an email spoofing case and ensured the recovery of ₹2.16 crore that was illegally routed to a mule bank account in Gujarat.

The case involved forged official email IDs connected to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company. Using fake email credentials, the accused misled company representatives by manipulating business transaction-related email exchanges and diverting funds in a planned manner.

Based on a complaint filed on 02 February 2025 by company representatives, investigators found that the spoofed email IDs were used to transfer ₹2.16 crore to a mule account in a bank located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Soon after receiving the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police Station acted within the “golden hour” and issued a notice to the concerned bank. The mule account was then frozen quickly, which stopped any further siphoning of the money.

During the investigation, police discovered that the spoofed email IDs were operated from Nigeria, pointing to the possible involvement of an international cyber fraud network. After continued legal and technical follow-ups, the police moved the court. On 05 January 2026, the court ordered the release of the frozen funds. Following the court’s directions, the full ₹2.16 crore was successfully refunded to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, marking a major step in cybercrime investigation and victim restitution.

Police said efforts are still on to trace and arrest those behind the fraud. The investigation is continuing to identify the full network involved.
