After months of availability on other platforms, Google has started testing its Gemini AI assistant within the Chrome browser on Chromebooks, signalling a gradual expansion to ChromeOS users.
According to a report, the AI-powered feature has begun appearing on select ChromeOS devices through the latest Canary builds. This marks the first step in bringing Gemini’s browser-based capabilities to Chromebooks. Google has also confirmed the rollout on its support page, stating that Gemini in Chrome will arrive on ChromeOS with Chrome version 144. The rollout will begin with a limited number of devices and expand over time.
Gemini in Chrome was first introduced for Windows and macOS users in September 2025 in the US. The feature allows users to access the Gemini AI assistant directly inside the Chrome browser, without leaving their active tabs.
With Gemini in Chrome, users can reference open tabs, summarise webpages, compare information across multiple sites, and use data from previously visited pages to answer queries. The tool is designed to support everyday tasks such as travel planning, online shopping, and research. For instance, users can organise flight, hotel, and vacation details across several tabs or compare multiple product options, such as mattresses, without switching apps.
The assistant appears within the browser interface itself, enabling users to continue browsing while interacting with Gemini. This approach reduces the need to manually copy text or move between different applications while reading or researching online.
For Chromebook users, the update arrives later than expected. However, its presence in Canary builds indicates that development is progressing. Google has not shared a confirmed timeline for a wider release, and it may take time before Gemini in Chrome becomes available to all ChromeOS users.
For now, access remains limited to selected devices, with a broader rollout expected gradually as testing continues.
