Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the early production of the company’s Cybercab robotaxi and its humanoid robot Optimus will begin at a very slow pace before gaining speed over time.
Much of Tesla’s 1.39 trillion dollar valuation is based on investor confidence in its self driving technology and humanoid robots. This is despite the fact that most of the company’s current revenue and profit still come from electric vehicle sales.
Replying to a post on X about Cybercab production starting in less than 100 days, Musk explained that the speed of manufacturing depends on how complex the product is. He said production tends to slow down when there are many new parts and steps involved.
“For Cybercab and Optimus, almost everything is new, so the early production rate will be agonizingly slow, but eventually end up being insanely fast,” Musk wrote.
The Cybercab is a two seater vehicle that has been designed without manual controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla has earlier said it plans to begin large scale production of the Cybercab in 2026. The company also hopes to start producing Optimus towards the end of the same year.
In December, Musk said Tesla was testing robotaxis without safety monitors sitting in the front passenger seat.
Last year, Tesla launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The service used Model Y vehicles equipped with a version of the company’s Full Self Driving software. These early operations were limited to specific areas and included a human safety monitor.
Musk has described the humanoid robot project as a key part of Tesla’s long term vision. He believes it could eventually become larger than the company’s vehicle business. According to him, these robots could create huge economic value by handling tasks that people do not want to do.
