Strengthening its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets, AI research firm Anthropic has announced a key leadership appointment as it prepares to expand operations in India.
On 01/16/2026, Anthropic named Irina Ghose as Managing Director for India, ahead of opening its first office in Bengaluru. The appointment comes as the Claude maker accelerates its international expansion amid rising global competition in artificial intelligence.
Ghose brings more than 30 years of experience in building and scaling technology businesses. She most recently served as Managing Director of Microsoft India, where she led enterprise AI adoption across sectors such as banking and financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and government. She spent 24 years at the software company.
“Irina’s expertise in scaling technology businesses and driving enterprise transformation makes her the ideal leader as we expand,” said Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic. “As we grow our teams and deepen engagement across India’s public and private sectors, Irina will ensure our approach is grounded in local insight and aligned with our mission,” he added.
Ghose said India is at a turning point in how artificial intelligence is applied. “Indian organizations are moving beyond experimentation toward applied AI, where trust, safety, and long-term impact matter as much as innovation. Anthropic’s mission resonates with my belief that technology should empower people, expand access, and create lasting value across India’s diverse languages and communities,” she said.
Anthropic had earlier announced plans in 10/2025 to open its first India office in Bengaluru, as it looks to grow its global footprint. The company also plans to hire a local team focused on building AI solutions for India-specific use cases. A news outlet had earlier reported on these expansion plans.
The India team will work closely with policymakers and academic institutions, strengthen developer engagement, and build partnerships with enterprises using AI to address local challenges. Anthropic is also prioritising model training across nearly 12 Indian languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu.
India is a key market for the company. It ranks as the second-largest global market for Claude. Anthropic’s 4th Economic Index showed that nearly 50% of usage from India is focused on computer and mathematical tasks.
Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei has previously highlighted India’s scale of technical talent and the “commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets”.
“There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company… India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically,” he said.
