Motorola Razr Fold enters book-style segment with bigger display and lower price

A new contender is reshaping the foldable smartphone conversation in the United States as Motorola steps into territory long dominated by Samsung.

For years, Samsung and Motorola have taken different routes in the foldable market. Samsung has offered both book-style and clamshell foldables, while Motorola stayed focused on flip-style devices. That changed at the CES 2026 technology exhibition in Las Vegas, where Motorola unveiled the Motorola Razr Fold, its first book-style foldable smartphone.

Motorola’s strategy has centered on delivering premium features at more accessible prices. This approach has helped the company rise to become the number 2 smartphone brand in the US foldable segment. With a 28% share of the US foldable market, Motorola has surpassed Samsung in certain growth metrics, signaling a shift in consumer preference beyond a single dominant brand.

One of the Razr Fold’s strongest talking points is its display advantage. The device features a slightly larger internal screen and a marginally bigger cover display compared with its main rival, the Galaxy Z Fold series. More importantly, the Razr Fold supports stylus input. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 does not support a stylus and the Z Fold 8, expected later this year, is rumored to bring it back, Motorola has already integrated stylus functionality, positioning the device as a strong productivity tool.

Pricing is another area where Motorola is aiming to stand out. The Razr Fold is expected to launch at a lower price than the Galaxy Z Fold, without feeling like a “budget” option. Motorola appears to be targeting users who want a book-style foldable but are unwilling to spend close to $2,000.

On the camera front, the Razr Fold offers triple 50MP cameras, including a periscope telephoto lens. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a 200MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera. While Motorola has not yet revealed full specifications, details about its chipset and battery are still pending. However, expectations point to a battery larger than the Z Fold 7’s 4,400mAh unit, along with faster charging.

The Motorola Razr Fold is expected to arrive in North America by Q3 this year, with more details on pricing and specifications likely to emerge closer to launch.
