Google has introduced a new feature called Personal Intelligence in its AI chatbot Gemini. The update aims to solve two major issues faced by users, which are memory loss and lack of context in long conversations. These problems often lead to incorrect answers, inconsistencies, and confusion, especially for users working on long term projects.
In a blog post, the company explained how this feature will make Gemini more personalised. Many users often ask chatbots questions such as “Do you know my favourite colour?” and receive random or inaccurate answers. Personal Intelligence is designed to fix this by allowing Gemini to remember user specific details and use the right context.
For an AI to offer personalised responses, it needs to retain memory and understand user behaviour. While AI systems still struggle with long term memory, they are improving at pulling data from external sources. Google is using this ability, known as retrieval augmented generation, to personalise Gemini.
This is not an entirely new feature, but a new way of using an existing one. Earlier, users could connect Gemini with Google Drive, Gmail, Photos, and other apps mainly to fetch information or perform tasks. With Personal Intelligence, this process becomes smoother and more natural.
Once users get access, they can enable the feature by tapping the “For you” option in the Gemini app. This activates contextual memory, allowing Gemini to answer questions about the user and their daily routine. The feature is turned off by default and can be disabled anytime through Settings under Connected apps.
Google also said Gemini will try to show where it gets information from, making it easier for users to verify responses. If needed, users can ask the chatbot to share the source. “You can also easily regenerate responses without personalization for a particular chat, or use temporary chats to have a conversation without personalization,” the post added.
The company clarified that Gemini will not make assumptions about sensitive topics such as health unless the user asks. It also confirmed that data from connected apps will not be used to train the AI model.
