Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday stressed the need for lawyers, especially young advocates, to stay updated with modern technology and global trends to handle the changing nature of crime and emerging challenges.
Speaking at separate felicitation ceremonies organised by the Hisar Bar Association and the Hansi Bar Association, the CJI said the legal profession is undergoing a major shift. He added that being technologically aware is no longer a choice but a necessity for timely and effective justice delivery.
Recalling his early days, Justice Kant said he began his legal career in Hisar and shares a deep emotional bond with the local Bar. “Homecoming is for a person who leaves home, but I never left home,” he said. “My duration in Hisar may not have been very long but the length of my relationship with you is unending. I can candidly confess that the amount of love, affection, care and mentorship I got from the Hisar Bar have been the biggest achievements in my life.”
He said his association with the Hisar Bar is not just professional but also personal. Sharing an early career memory, he said, “I came to the Hisar court on April 21, 1984. On July 29, I began my practice under Advocate Atma Ram Bansal.”
Justice Kant highlighted that the Indian judiciary has made wide use of modern technology, especially during the Covid pandemic, when virtual courts ensured uninterrupted access to justice.
He pointed out that the nature of crimes is rapidly changing. “Today, the graph and nature of crimes are changing rapidly. Cybercrime, digital arrest scams, online frauds, and technology based offences are continuously on the rise. To effectively argue such cases, lawyers must develop an understanding of technology and the ability to analyse digital evidence,” he said.
He also noted that with India’s growing economy, commercial disputes and corporate litigation are increasing. Advocates, he said, must prepare for cases that go beyond national boundaries. “You need to prepare yourself and you need to rebuild yourself and acquire the bigger status of a global lawyer,” he told young advocates.
At the Hansi event, the CJI said court judgments are now being translated into multiple languages to make them easier for citizens to understand. He added that digital tools are helping courts manage rising workloads.
He also welcomed the decision to make Hansi a district and requested the setting up of an e library at the local judicial complex.
