Amar Subramanya’s entry comes at a critical moment for the company, which has been working to accelerate the rollout of advanced AI features amid increasing competition from other global tech players.
In his new role, Subramanya will lead Apple Foundation Models and guide the company’s machine learning research. He will report directly to Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. The move signals a renewed push by Apple to strengthen its AI roadmap and close gaps in feature development.
Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft, where he most recently served as Corporate Vice President of AI. Prior to that, he spent more than sixteen years at Google in several research and engineering leadership roles. His work included serving as Vice President of Engineering for the Gemini assistant and holding key roles across the Bard and Gemini product teams. His early career also includes research roles at Microsoft and engineering experience at IBM.
His wide ranging background across AI research, product engineering and the deployment of large scale models is expected to help Apple accelerate its efforts in building more advanced AI experiences for users.
